I took a week off this week from work. To be honest, I have been feeling a tiny bit down partly due to being stuck in a chain trying to get our house sold and move to our next adventure. Thats another story to come.
So, to cheer myself up, I decided to try something a bit creative. Making cold pressed soap.
Let me tell you, this is not as easy as it looks. Those gorgeous handmade soaps we all see at the local markets and stores made me think, yeah, I can just pop onto you tube, watch a video and make some pretty soaps that look heavenly!
I bought a relatively inexpensive kit which included a soap mould, cutters, fragrance and some mica powders for colour.
I roped in Cammie and off we went on our soap making adventure.
We had a really good laugh (which really was the point) and spilled sparkly mica powders everywhere. We got shea butter on the worktop, the chopping board, the microwave, the floor. I'm sure you can imagine the cleanup.
I let Cammie choose the colours and have to admit, he chose a combination I would never have selected 😆
He even chose colours for the top of the soap (which i think will probably wash off as soon as we use them) but it was all part of the creative process he assured me!
We pulled the soap out today and I have to be honest, its the wonkiest soap I think i have ever seen!!! It might not make the stores (im not sure it would even make the seconds table), but it is made from very good ingredients, its super creamy and smells amazing.
Now we need to leave our soap for 4 weeks to complete the saponification process (so it will be foammy and bubbly) and for the moisture levels to reduce making a firmer soap.
I have a lot of learning to do if I want it to be better in the future, but it was a really fun way to spend a few hours with my hubby and really, that was the whole point.
I hope our misadventures dont deter you from trying this out yourself. Hand made soaps, using ingredients you know and can pronounce, are definitely better for you and your skin will thank you.
